The test evaluates your ability to solve math problems and apply math to varying contexts. You are given 90 minutes to answer 46 questions. You MUST receive a minimum score of 145 to pass the test.
45% is Quantitative Reasoning (positive and negative whole numbers, decimals, fractions; ratios, proportions and percents; geometric measurement)
55% is Algebraic Reasoning (expressions, polynomials, equations, inequalities, linear equations, quadratic equations, patterns and functions)
Tools: You may use a TI-30XS (I have some for you to practice with!) or an online version of it. You may also use the online formula sheet and a white board and marker.
Types of questions:
Multiple-choice
Fill-in-the-blank
Drop-down
Drag-and-drop
Hot-spot
Remember, most math is just another language that you need to learn. Before you take the Compass math, you should make sure you know the rules for order of operations, adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying fractions, doing percentage problems and proportions, and solving linear equations with variables. After you understand which "rule" to apply to a particular math problem, most of the calculations are simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Unfortunately, many smart students get math problems wrong because they understand the advanced math rules, but make simple mistakes in basic addition or multiplication calculations. Before you take the Compass test, make sure that you know your times tables like the back of your hand - this will make fractions, factorization, algebra and most other advanced math concepts much simpler, and avoid silly mistakes.
Division is just the other side of multiplication, but it can be scary for some students. Master your skills with these worksheets. They work best by printing them. Each sheet has an answer page after it.
Mixed Operations - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division all Mixed Together. This is how "real life" math works, so it is great practice to mix up your signs. Many students make mistakes on math problem just because they don't look at the sign telling them to add, multiply, divide or subtract. Pay attention to what operation you are doing!
Answer each question online and get immediate feedback, including answer and an explanation of the process if you got it wrong. If you register, the website will track your practice and make exercises increasingly complex as you master each concept.
Start with 6th grade stuff - much of the GED and Compass basics are right here!
